The Monarch Butterfly

Posted on July 30, 2022

The Monarch butterfly was recently placed on the endangered species list. This butterfly has always been one of my favorites. I can’t explain why, it’s a beautiful butterfly and easily recognizable.

Its not too late though. We can help this animal come back. Milkweed is the only plant that Monarch caterpillars eat. Its where the adult butterflies lay their eggs. Without milkweed, there is no Monarch Butterfly.

However, you don’t want the evasive Tropical Milkweed.

We’ve found that the Live Monarch Foundation will send you free milkweed seeds that are native to our area if you just send them a self addressed stamped envelope. If you need a stamp or envelope to send to them, swing by the library and let us know you’d like to help save the butterflies. We’ll give you stamps and envelopes. If you include a donation of $1 or more in your envelope, they’ll send you a pack of over 40 seeds.

Send your Self Addressed Stamped Envelopes to:

At the Green Forest Library, we try to support our local environment by planting native species that insects such as bees and butterflies will enjoy. If you see these creatures in or near our garden space, please do not kill them. They shouldn’t hurt you if you don’t lash out at them.
